5 On-The-Go Paleo Snacks
If you're like me, and like to eat something every few hours, or at least have a snack ready nearby, just in case, then this list is for you. These items can all be easily placed in a plastic bag or container and kept in your purse or travel bag.
1. Fruit - This is my ultimate go-to. How easy is it to pack an organic apple with you? Easy-peasy. But apples aren't the only fruit that can be portable. Bananas and organic pears are other great options, as well as organic berries - strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. The berries will require a plastic bag or container, but still quick and easy to throw together.
2. Nuts/Seeds - Almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc., are all great snacks, and they're packed with nutrition to keep you going. I often keep a bag of almonds in my car for a quick snack.
3. Boiled Eggs - This requires some planning, and possible refrigeration if going to be away from home long, but it's the ultimate protein snack. Yes, it's a bit random to chow down on a boiled egg or two, but this snack will definitely tide you over until your next meal. I like to boil about 6 to 8 eggs on Sunday night to have as snacks throughout the week. Word to the wise: boiled eggs smell, well, like eggs. So you might not want to take them, say, into a movie theater as a snack. ;-) Just keep them in the shell until ready to eat and they will last a good day without refrigeration.
4. Larabars - I love Larabars, and they are one of the only foods I buy packaged. Larabars are made with whole ingredients, like dates, nuts, coconut and dried fruits. A variety of flavors are available, however, not all of them are Paleo. If they contain peanuts or chocolate, they are not considered Paleo. I love the coconut cream pie and cashew cookie flavors, which are Paleo-friendly. I wouldn't recommend having a Larabar everyday - just when you're in a hurry and need a quick snack.
5. Sweet Potato/Kale Chips - Homemade sweet potato and kale chips are excellent snacks. Yes, you can purchase these at the grocery or health food store, but check the ingredient list first! Some brands aren't technically Paleo because of the oils used to bake them, or added ingredients. Terra Sweet Potato and Root Chips are good options, on occasion. But it's really best to make them at home, so you can control all of the added ingredients. Here are a couple of excellent tutorials on making your own sweet potato chips and kale chips.
